This is certainly a very different amp from the 3/100 Head.
Most definitely. Actually, the 2/50 Head is nothing but the 2/50-2 Combo in a head format. This, alongside the fact that it can be connected to any type of cabinet, makes the 2/50 Head an exceptionally useful tool for those who are always on the move and need to have instant access to a range of utterly convincing tones covering all music from jazz to blues and heavy rock.
Yet it also manages to be extremely portable.
The weight and footprint have been minimized to allow you to carry it like a suitcase, it offers you a practically infinite number of sounds and is so versatile that it can be connected to any type of cabinet.
How does the sound change from one cabinet to the other?
The basic tone is identical to that of the 2/50-2 Combo, and - depending on the type of cabinet you use - you can color your sound in different ways. For example, if you connect it to a 2x12 open-back cabinet, you'll achieve a vintage-style, open, three-dimensional sound that is similar to that made by a combo amp. Whereas, if you attach it to a 4x12, you can produce an immense wall of sound, rich and well defined at the low end, more suitable for rock. Connected to a 4x10, the 2/50 Head gives you greater definition in the midrange, creating a decidedly bluesy sound.

Are the auxiliary features on the rear panel the same, too?
Exactly the same - you can use the effect loop in series or in parallel and mix them using the Level knob to ensure total control. The Presence and Resonance controls can be used to set highs and lows to cater to the dimensions of the venue where you're playing. There is also the full Full Power/Half Power function that allows you to reduce your output down to around 25W, which is ideal for when you're playing in small clubs, where toning it down is sure to help you get booked again!
Who would you say this amp is suitable for?
Mainly for those who - for reasons of convenience - keep their set-up in a fixed location and play with a number of different bands. Guitarists in this situation need to be able to achieve a comprehensive tonal range and to play in all manner of different styles. As it was designed around Celestion Vintage 30's technology - the worldwide standard - it can be used practically everywhere.
